The Pozzani Silkolene-sponsored UK Championship is now into its fifth season, so you may have read or better still, experienced in the flesh some of the thrills and spills this unique discipline can serve up. But what is the background to this relatively new form of racing?
Well, it maybe new-ish here but not so in the States. Known for many years now as Flattrack, the racing there can trace its roots back to the early 20th. Century biking pioneers racing on cinder trotting tracks found then, and actually still now, across the US. It is in the States where it grew and grew with thousands of race fans enjoying sport. It’s also been the way to start a successful motorcycle racing career as far as our American cousins are concerned. How does this list of one-time Flattrack champs grab ya?: Nicky Hayden, Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson, Freddie Spencer and Kenny Roberts? They all had to compete on Mile, 1/2 Mile, TT and Shorttrack to become Champion.
Flattrack was finally imported here by us – ShorttrackUK - in 2005 when we held our very first meeting on April 23rd 2005 at the Norfolk Arena with just 18 enthusiastic riders. Over the past four years from Sheffield to Eastbourne, King's Lynn to Stoke, Buxton to the superb half-mile circuit in Ammanford in West Wales, the Short Track UK series has become an important feature of motorcycling racing here in the UK: playing to huge and appreciative crowds at the annual BMF Shows at the East of England Showground.
And now we have over 150 Shorttrack ACU license Holders and we have up to 80 riders per meeting competing.
Now coming up to the 2010 season the future of the sport in the UK is looking bright, with a fast growing youth scene and speedway tracks wishing to run more Shorttrack. Also, with our new indoor venue which means we can run all year round, we are positive that ShorttrackUK is here to stay.
